Reconstituting families and their demographic behaviour in intra- and extra-mural London parishes c. 1550-1750
Introduction | Cheapside | Clerkenwell
This work, undertaken jointly by Richard Smith (principal investigator) and Gill Newton (research officer), forms part of a collaborative project with Dr Vanessa Harding (Department of History, Birkbeck College, University of London) and Dr Matthew Davies (Centre for Metropolitan History) entitled People in Place and funded generously by AHRC (2003-2006).
The project's overall aim is to set family groups and family and individual demographic behaviour in seventeenth and early eighteenth century London within their physical and, especially, housing environments. It involves linkage of individuals and their families appearing in a variety of documentary sources, as well as a large body of property histories previously assembled at the Centre for Metropolitan History. Richard Smith and Gill Newton's investigations focus principally on two contrasting settings in terms of wealth and demographic experiences, Cheapside and Clerkenwell.
